For Christmas
At this time of year, cities become especially charming, and even a simple walk can turn into a small celebration
If you love Christmas as much as I do, I highly recommend taking a trip in December at least once.
At this time of year, cities become especially cozy, and even an ordinary walk can turn into a small celebration.
This Christmas journey took me to Heidelberg, Munich, Wolfratshausen, Sölden, Prague, and Kraków.
The stories about each of these places are coming next.
Heidelberg, Germany
Heidelberg was one of the most pleasant discoveries of this Christmas trip.
This small university town on the banks of the Neckar River, with its historic castle on the hill, narrow Old Town streets, and Christmas markets spread across several squares, has a very special atmosphere.
I liked that Heidelberg did not feel overly touristy or crowded. It is the kind of place where you simply want to wander around, drink coffee, hot chocolate or mulled wine, admire the decorated shop windows, and enjoy the Christmas spirit.
If you are looking for a cozy German town for a winter trip, Heidelberg is definitely worth a visit.
Munich, Germany
Munich at Christmas is a classic that is worth seeing at least once.
I have visited Munich in autumn, but during the Christmas season the city looks completely different. The lights, Christmas markets, and festively decorated streets and buildings create an atmosphere that makes you feel as if you have arrived in a different city.
Munich will definitely charm anyone who loves the Christmas atmosphere.
Wolfratshausen, Germany
After Munich, Wolfratshausen felt like a completely different world.
It is a small Bavarian town where life moves at a slower pace, and the Christmas atmosphere is found not in large squares but in cozy streets and local cafés.
Places like this help you see not only the tourist side of Germany, but also everyday life. There are fewer people, less hustle and bustle, and a stronger feeling of authentic local life.
I enjoyed simply walking through the streets, admiring the Christmas decorations, and watching the town prepare for the holidays.
If Munich is a grand Christmas celebration, then Wolfratshausen is Christmas in its coziest, most home-like form.
Solden, Austria
Solden was one of the best discoveries of this Christmas trip.
It is probably one of the best places for those who love winter, mountains, and an active lifestyle. Here, it is easy to combine everything people love about this season: snow-covered peaks, festive lights, cozy cafés, and sports.
I enjoyed not only the scenery but also downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, walks along snowy trails, and the atmosphere of a Christmas village in the Alps.
There is something especially magical about places where the spirit of the holidays meets the grandeur of nature. When snow-covered mountains surround you, Christmas lights glow in the distance, and the air feels crisp and wintry, the holiday season feels even more special.
Sölden became one of those places I would love to return to. Not only for the skiing or the mountains, but for that feeling of opening the curtains in the morning and seeing the snow-covered Alps right outside your window.
Prague, Czech Republic
I almost rushed through Prague — I arrived in the evening and was already taking a train the next morning. But even in that short time, I managed to catch the Christmas spirit of this wonderful city.
The Old Town Square with its Christmas market, the famous Astronomical Clock, and the narrow streets of the Old Town decorated with festive lights create a special atmosphere that makes you want to stay longer.
I really enjoyed simply walking through the city center, admiring the historic buildings, listening to Christmas music, and watching the city come alive in the evening.
There are so many beautiful places in Prague that one evening and one morning are definitely not enough. Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, scenic viewpoints, cozy cafés, and numerous Christmas markets all deserve to be explored at a slower pace.
So if you are planning a trip to Prague, be sure to give yourself more time. It is a city made for long walks, beautiful views, and those moments when you simply do not want to rush.
Krakow, Poland
And the final stop of this Christmas journey was Kraków.
Another city that is perfect for winter travel. Beautiful architecture, festively decorated streets, the Christmas market in the Main Market Square, and the aroma of mulled wine and traditional Polish treats create a special atmosphere.
I enjoyed simply walking through the historic center, admiring the old buildings, stopping by cafés, and soaking up the festive spirit of the city.
Krakow combines the grandeur of an old European city with a sense of coziness that feels especially strong during the Christmas season. That is why it became the perfect ending to my Christmas trip.
All of these cities were different, yet each of them gave me that same feeling of Christmas magic that makes me want to set off on winter journeys again and again.
