Interesting facts about badminton:
A badminton shuttlecock can reach speeds faster than a Formula 1 car, yet it weighs only about 5 grams.
A shuttlecock slows down faster than any ball. Right after a hit, it travels at incredible speed, but its unique shape causes it to lose speed very quickly.
The sport gets its name from an estate. Badminton was named after Badminton House, where the game became popular among the British aristocracy in the 19th century.
A shuttlecock consists of 16 feathers inserted into a cork base and weighs only 4.74–5.50 grams. For decades, professional badminton was played almost exclusively with feather shuttlecocks. In recent years, however, manufacturers have developed a new generation of synthetic shuttlecocks that closely resemble feather ones in both flight and feel.
Badminton has been an Olympic sport since 1992.
Badminton is one of the most popular sports in the world, with more than 200 million people playing it worldwide.
After just a few training sessions, most people notice improvements in coordination, balance, and reaction speed, even in everyday life. This is one of the reasons badminton is often called a sport for both the body and the mind.
My badminton journey
I first discovered competitive badminton after moving to Kyiv during my fifth year at university. Before that, like most people, I had only played badminton casually in the yard, on the beach, or while spending time outdoors.
I was 19 years old when I attended my first training session. Just a year later, at the age of 20, I decided to pursue badminton professionally.
Many athletes start their sporting journey much earlier, but that never stopped me. My dream of becoming a Master of Sport kept me moving forward.
After five years of dedicated training as a member of the Kyiv team, I achieved the title of Master of Sport of Ukraine. Later, I earned a diploma as a badminton coach.
Due to an injury, I had to leave professional sport. Over the years, I discovered new interests, took breaks from badminton, tried other sports, became passionate about fitness, and looked for new challenges. But each time, badminton brought me back to the court.
And although many years have passed since my first training session, I still love stepping onto the court, learning new things, and helping others discover badminton and the joy of movement and play.
